I'm really glad these video's were made available! I feel I kind of understand the point of twitter much better now, before it just seemed everyone said it was awesome but never really said what the point or social niche it was filling was.
ReplyDeleteJess, what is the tweet homework that you assigned for the Monday Sept 12th lecture? I forgot to write it down, and I am not sure if you have all the powerpoint slides posted up online.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I too am confused as to what we were asked to do with the new science journalism. As I understood it, we read 2 articles then tweet a short summary about them and also tweet why it is important to you? Anything else? Is that correct? Also, what are the BoraZ's Blog and David Dobbs things? what do we do with those?
ReplyDeleteYes Bailey, that is the homework. The slides are up so you can click through to view again too. And, there is some reading for next week. The other readings you note, you can go ahead and read, they will be discussed in class on Wed. but are not assigned readings for homework. The syllabus is a guide as to what we'll be doing. But in the lectures I'll always be more specific about what needs to be done/read. Make sense?
ReplyDeleteThis was our class activity but time ran out so it can be done for homework:
With a partner or in a group of 3:
Visit the New Science Journalism Project, choose a tag (energy, environment, health) and read a couple of articles
Discuss them with your partner/in your group
Each person in the group must then tweet (@JessL):
a short synopsis of each article (one tweet per article)
why the New Science Journalism project is important (@JessL and @nsjproject)
Also come to next class having read:

After reviewing some articles in the New Science Journalism Project www.newsciencejournalism.net, I've now got a better idea of how our e-portfolio's are going to be useful going forward. When on the site, if you click on the author's name within the article, you'll find something of an e-portfolio of that author. Jess was commenting how science journalism is an emerging field -- we will be prepared for the cutting edge!
ReplyDelete"Each person in the group must then tweet (@JessL):

So we need three tweets in total?
Exactly Paulette! You will be right at the cutting edge!
ReplyDeleteYes, Naomi, you have that right; three tweets.
ReplyDeleteToday's lecture was really helpful. I was finding it a bit difficult to manoeuvre twitter until today. I had heard the term hash tag, but had no clue what it meant.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the help into the information age!
that's great news Cassandra!

ReplyDeleteI had my first ALES lab today. I am in the CSL lab and am very excited to get started with my placement at Sustain SU. I look forward to blogging and tweeting to you all about the environmental conscious events on campus.
ReplyDeleteFrom this lecture, I knew more about online journalism. I like to read online articles about environment and foresty. It is cool!
ReplyDeleteI am unsure of where to post for module 2 as the headers for all the posts are 'Lectures', so since this is what we learnt for module two, I will post my blog link here!

I am in lab section D3.
I was just looking through everything we've learned so far in ALES, and at first when I got Twitter I thought it wasn't useful, and just another social media to have. Now, I am finding Twitter useful and I'm following many RD and different companies that have a main focus on nutrition. I love it! Everyday Health and ChooseMyPlate.gov are two very interesting people I'm following and give excellent tips everyday about nutrition.
ReplyDeleteex. Every 17sec someone in the US gets diagnosed with diabetes. and it gives 5 nutrition tips to decrease your chances of getting diabetes. Really COOL!
I really enjoyed those videos, especially "twitter in plain english". I've even shown them to a few people who are now in this class. It really summarizes what twitter is into one cute little video
