Module 5: Labs

This week in the lectures we are focussing on ways to disseminate our research. In the labs, we'll get to practise two main ways. We'll be making a poster (from a science article) and we'll then have to present that poster. The latter will be graded by the TAs in class.

Here is the rubric for the poster presentation you'll give at the end of the lab. Take a look so you'll have an idea of what you need to include in your poster: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CTk9FMWoEhSrMEeauMfjEYgcLU5Vl7L-GYORVj4Xq08/edit?hl=en_US

Colin Purrington has this useful template for a poster that you might want to follow:

Here are some examples of how NOT to design a poster:

  1. Great poster presentation presentation, I have noticed a lot of the dos and don'ts in class presentations that I have seen but hearing it again never hurts. It was interesting to hear a graduates approach and methods to designing her presentation.

  2. The poster presentation was helpful, I have never had to do one before. I never would have thought that my clothing could clash with my poster and distract from my presentation.

  3. the visual examples provided by both jess through the links and Maira really highlight the differences between a good and bad poster. Makes you wonder why people do make bad posters with all the information thats avalible out there

  4. I have learned a lot from Maira today about the importance of presentation when doing a poster. I will definitely be looking over examples of good & bad posters when I make mine!

  5. Thank you for posting a template that we can follow. that will be extremely helpful.
It's funny that Maria commented on clothing. I may have been one of those nerds that matched my poster :)

  6. This was a really great presentation! It was cool to hear from someone, in my field of study, using what we learn in class for her schooling. I learned some great tips for making posters and also for presenting that poster.

  7. The information in the presentation was very useful, especially for the lab exercise. I found her tips, especially for layout and presentation, to be very helpful. I never would have thought to go to the Student Success Centre to get help with my poster, so that information will definitely help me in the future.

  8. I think the presentation on how to make an effective poster will be very helpful for our lab on Wednesday. Also, doing the PK presentation last week should help those of us who don't like public speaking as much, to feel a bit more comfortable this week!

  9. I learned a lot from Maria's poster presentation today. Most people do not think too hard when it comes down to making a poster, but there are many techniques with what to do and what to avoid when creating them. It is harder to have less text than more in a poster because the difficulty comes from cramming everything you want to say in a summarized form. Too much text is unattractive to the eye because it looks heavy and no one wants to read it. Also, if the poster is unappealing, there is a greater chance of you not listening to the presentation because you are not drawn to it. No presenter would want that to happen. If i had to take one tip i think was most important from today, it would be to refrain from so much text.

  10. I found the poster presentation very useful. I now have a better idea of how to make my poster more appealing and eye catching. There is so many certain aspects to look over in order to make a good poster such as font sizes, color, layout, and amount of text and images.

  11. Ive never really been told how to make a proper poster presentation before so im really glad I got the chance to learn how to properly make one from the guest lecturer today. I now know that font size, color, amount of information and even what you are wearing are all important to the final outcome of your poster. The information i learned today will certainly help in my lab tomorrow!

  12. I had no idea that there was so much that went into a poster from all the technicalities of the dos and don'ts to just general tips and pros/cons. Definitely a lot more work than what I've had to do thus far.

  13. Maria provided helpful suggestions for creating a poster. Standard poster sizes, font sizes, and level of detail to include are all important components to be mindful of. I now know that if I am expected to create an academic poster in the future, I will definitely consult with the Student Success Centre for guidance.

  14. Had the poster lab yesterday. Found it very overwhelming that we had 45 minutes to made a poster that was worth 10% of our final grade.

  15. I'm sort of nervous for the lab and am wondering if we need to bring a scientific paper? ... Even though the syllabus says to have one for Friday's class? It seems stressful to have to do a good poster with so little time to plan and research the facts in the paper. :(

  16. Maria had some very useful information on what one should and shouldn't do when creating and presenting a poster. I will definitely start keeping my eyes open to learn from others mistakes and success.

  18. Karissa, we'll have an article for you to read in lab and we'll try to give everyone time to work on the poster before your presentation at the end of the lab

  19. There are many elements that go into making a poster that people don't even think about! Such as the clothing point that maria made. I will definitely be paying attention to not overcrowding the poster with text this lab.
It is worth a large portion of the grade, I hope there is enough time....

  20. I learned a lot from Maria's poster presentation. It's not all about getting the pen and glue out. Font size, certain colors (watching out for red-green color blindness). Watching the use of colors especially dark backgrounds. I never thought there could be too many picture on a poster. I learned from Maria that the poster has to be eye catching, and I should watch out for using too much text, because we must first draw the people to our poster, then we can give them more information.

  21. I just finished my lab. Obviously, it is a heavy job for us to have a poster in 30 minutes. But my group members are excellent. We used what we have learned in class like the arrangement of pictures and texts, how to make a beautiful ,simply, clear poster. We thought that we made a great job today.

  22. I found Maria's poster presentation very helpful. Its helping me right now fir lab exercise and it will help me in the future. I know where to get my resources and templates.

  23. Maria's presentation was very eye opening. I have a lot to learn in regards to presentations. I liked her tips on appropriate backgrounds, word counts, and dress code. All things I need o work on.
I'm glad we are learning a lot of practical information which will be useful in our business fields.

  24. My lab ran yesterday afternoon. The information regarding poster presentations given on the class blog proved to be incredibly helpful. I feel that I have a clear understanding of how to create effect and interesting posters now!

  25. Maira was very informative about how to make an effective poster, I definitely learned a lot from her, and also from practising in our lab class. This comes at just the right time for me to, as in my biology class we are going to start putting together research posters very soon.

  26. Before Maira's presentation, I had never even thought of what program would be used to make a poster presentation. I would have never guessed it can be done on powerpoint! I assumed this information would be taught in grad school, yet I am glad we got to learn earlier, and put it into action in the lab.

I found it interesting that Maria's poster was simple, yet the few images she included helped her win the prize. And like she said, I think it is important to keep an open eye when attending other presentations-just to see what works and what doesn't. I will be sure to look at other presentations/posters more critically now, gaining knowledge from others.

  28. I found this lab very frustrating. Although it was a very good learning experience, I can't help but feel upset that this one impromptu project was worth 10% of my mark for this class. I looked through the rubric prior to going into the lab and knew what was expected and I thought I would be able to get everything on the poster in time. My resulting poster, however, did not look anything like I had intended it to. I feel that If I had a bit more time, I would be able to better display what I had learned about posters. Even though I feel like the poster was an unfair evaluation I did learn a lot about how to manage my time. If I was to do the project again, I would definitely spend more time on the actual set up of the poster and images than organizing the information in the article.

  29. Honestly this lab was a bit painful to me at the beginning because we had to read an article, make a poster based on it and then present it in only 30 minutes. The time was restricted and plus, I've never made a poster before. But finally I went it throgh and all my lab mates did a really good job. I learned that never look down on uourself because you got more potentials than what you think.

  30. I think this lab was difficult but quite fun! We needed to read an article with 4 pages in 10 minutes and then finished a poster in 30 minutes! The time was limited and we tried our very best to complete it. Finally, we had done a great job and we could finish our speech in 1 minute!I never know that I could be that fast in grouping the data for the poster.I saw my improvements after having lectures!

  31. The lectures helped me a lot with this week's lab.

  32. i honestly don't see how this was worth 10%...40mins, and really didn't have any practice. But then again I don't really see how where my grades come from in this course...
Had fun presenting in 1min though.

  33. I never thought that a poster would be an effective way of presenting research information. Before Maria's presentation I thought that research was always presented as an article. I learned that when done properly, posters can be an informative way of translating information.
The lab this week posed a challenge because of time constraints, but it really forced my group to take Maria's advice into practice. We could only include the most important points of the article while making the the poster aesthetically pleasing for an audience. I'l keep this in mind when making a poster that I will have more than 45min to complete.

  34. I never knew how to effectively prepare a poster. This was a great lab activity. The differences between posters was amazing considering they were all based on the same article. This information will come in handy because I have to do a poster for another class in a few weeks!

  35. This lecture and lab component was super helpful as I have to make a poster presentation for my NUTR 400 research project. Will definitely keep the do's and dont's in mind! It was a hard lab though, to make a poster in such limited time.
