Lecture 17: Science Journal Articles

In today's lecture we will review the elements of a scientific paper:

Abstract
Introduction
Methods
Results
Discussion
Works Cited/References

The second example of an abstract comes from this article:

Green Tea Consumption Is Inversely Associated with the Incidence of Influenza Infection among Schoolchildren in a Tea Plantation Area of Japan

you can read the abstract here or the entire paper here.

Also very useful is this article: Writing the Empirical Journal Article by
Daryl J. Bem
He gives some very useful examples of opening statements and how to present your findings.

  1. I found this class a nice review of writing a scientific article. It's my third year of science courses and writing papers so it's interesting finding out how different teachers have different criteria dependent on the class.

  2. During the summer I took a class that required me to write an abstract and introduction etc... I had no clue with it and ofcourse went online to get more information about it... if Only I had this information before I would probably do better than how i did... for the results also keep in mind that using Excel to show your results (the tables and figure etc) is very helpful in translating those result data, tabls and figures into words.. and try to put all your research that you do that is relevant to your experiments in you discussion,it gives the result a good back up:)... very knowledgeable class prolly one of my fav classes so far:)

  3. This is an excellent class. I am currently working on a scientific poster and next week I will be starting a scientific paper for Bio 208. I will be referencing your powerpoint frequently over the next couple weeks.

    Thank you very much!

  8. This presentation was a good review of chem 101, 102, 261, 263 and bio 107 and 207. Mostly stuff I've heard before, but it's always helpful to have a refresher and another point of view from a professor. After hearing the lecture, it was pretty obvious that the practice paragraph had many completely unnecessary sentences.

  23. I learned to be a lot more concise in writing a paper. I have wrote papers like the article in class that contained way too many words.
Saying stuff like "we are not equally strong in all parts of it." is completely unnecessary to write. It gives no important information pertaining to the topic and is awkward to read.
You could summarize the article to:

  51. This lecture is probably the most useful and practical one we've had to date. I tend to make my lab reports and essays very "wordy" and so it was great to know how to make sentences more concise and simple. I think as students we often choose wordy sentences so it sounds like we know what we are talking about, but half of the time, we're just finding words to make the sentences and paragraphs longer. And because we're so used to doing that, the ability to use simple, concise words, is often hampered. But I'll definitely keep it in mind. Makes me feel a lot less stressed to write up the research article for my huge research project!

  52. The lecture today was extremely helpful especially when it followed a practice along with it. I did not knew what to include in an abstract before, and always got confused between introduction and abstract. I also learned may tips to avoid common mistakes while writing an academic paper. The ideas from today's class will help me become a good writer hopefully! and I will be using today's notes as a reference when i write my essays for this class as well as others.

  55. In my first year of University I had to revise a scientific article and found it very difficult. Taking lengthy and repetitive information and trying to understand it can be hard. I found this lecture very helpful and informative in how to write a good scientific article. I didn't know that people would prefer using smaller words such as when and where rather than trying to make it sound "smarter".

  56. I've only written a few academic papers but majority of them don't require an abstract. I find monday's lecture to be really helpful and I'm so glad I learned APA citations beforehand. Instead of focusing on the word count, you should focus on the quality of your writing. More words does not mean a quality paper. You have to make sure the reader clearly understands what you're trying to say.

  59. It is so important to keep scientific articles concise. The example of the Psychology paper contained too many 'filler' words. Summarizing your work will make your argument much stronger and easier for the reader to understand. It is about the quality of your work, not the length.

  61. This is useful, really. I have never learned how to write an article with right format before I came to Canada. Canadian's opinion on writing education is completely different. In China we write "composition", not "article" and teachers don't tell us what kind of format. We focus on the technique of using language, we don't emphasize "format". But not everybody's language is good enough to earn a high enough mark in exam as language is a kind of talent. So I like Canadians' way better---focusing on organization, structure logistic and clearance.
