Lecture 25: LinkedIn for Students

Welcome to a brand new week everyone!

Today we'll be introduced to LinkedIn and we'll have a little bit of time during the lecture to register and begin our exploration with LinkedIn and how it can be useful to you as students.

A reminder about the science article assignment which is due on Friday (the 18th) at 17:00. You must send your assignment via e-mail (yes, e-mail!) to BOTH your TA and myself. If you are doing option four and have chosen the poster option, you need to send your assignment to us via e-mail and then (if you have decided to do a physical poster) you can give me the poster on Monday before we start class (otherwise, an attachment with your e-poster is fine!).

  1. I'm sick and therefore, doing this class online. I set up my profile on LinkedIn but I am confused on what the Jennifer Klein homework is? As well as the 2 below it? If you can let me know that would be awesome!

  5. LinkedIn is a cool networking device to help us find jobs in our future! It is neat how we can join different groups and add applications to help us with this task. Definitely a useful tool in career building.

  6. I am amazed that I am one of the only 3 people in the class who had LinkedIn prior to this class! It is such a useful tool! The online groups are a great resource and it is a perfect way to stay in touch with previous co-workers! I am now up to 25 connections, and I just found 5 more during this class! I am glad that you are giving students the opportunity to learn about this social networking site because I think that it will just get more and more common throughout the years to come. LinkedIn will be of major use within the next few years. Thanks for teaching me more about it!

  10. This site seems cool and I'm sure it will be very helpful when I am finished my degree and am looking for a job. As of right now, everything is very bare and I am not sure what all I have to display on the page. Once I have more experience, it might be a little more useful! Hopefully with some more practice this site will seem easier to use. =)

  13. I had no idea there was a such thing as linkedin! In the summer I will be looking for a job so I think this will be super helpful in finding one and making connections with people in my area or in a job area I want to be involved in. It is a bit overwhelming but I think after I keep using it I will get used to it and figure out all the uses!

  14. I have been searching for a job for months!! I just got one yesterday. Wished I knew about LinkedIn before today. It would have made job hunting much easier. Out of all the classes I am taking this semester, this class has the most relevance to helping me survive in the jungle we call life. No offense to the to the other courses.

  15. I have a proposal for all you classmates looking for a job:
I'm looking for a bunch of ppl interested in delivering fertilizer for the month of may/early june. LOTS of overtime... long hours every day, 7 days a week for 5 weeks or so. Class 5, 3 or 1 licence is required. It a great way for a student to make a lot of money in a short amount of time. Its a big commitment but its a lot of fun. You deliver in the area north of Edmonton (Sturgeon, Strathcona, Westlock, & Thorhild counties) so im preferably looking for someone living in or around Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Morinville, Thorhild, Redwater, Westlock, ect or a community in that area. If anyone is interested let me know!

  16. Linked-In! Too clever. This tool is ingenious. I find it more credible than using craigslist or kijiji to find a job. The way that it's set up is very professional and I look forward to finding serious job posts that will work with my interests!

  17. Linkedin is pretty handy. Im glad we were shown this tool to use for jobs, and searching for people in the profession already. I look forward to looking at the types of jobs offered !

    This is my LinkedIn webpage.
I am surprised by its arrangement and glad to find this much useful group that I always like to have a contact with. Such as Dietitain career search. I would love to keep my eye on the LinkedIn status and absorb every worth message which brings me chance to get to know what I am interested in and what I need to know.
This is such an impressive class. So happy to have a chance to have an access to the LinkedIn and have my own account.

  20. I think the introduction of Linkedin in today's lecture is useful that it kinda looks like facebook but in a more formal style and relates to business! There is still events for you to press attending and see details on it. The main difference is Linkedin is not for finding job listings or to post any party pictures, it is a very useful tool for us to find people that are already working in our field of interest. Hence, we may contact them and it increases our chance of getting the type of jobs that we desire.

  21. I always thought that LinkedIn was for more "professional" people with lengthly resumes and numerous accomplishments. Thanks for teaching us how to use it as young undergraduate students!

  22. LinkedIn is such a useful website! I am such a shy person so I love the idea of getting to interact with others who have experience at a certain company. Although, I have never gone to a conference, and I doubt few if any of us have..so sometimes I think these websites are for people with more experience..but it's good to learn about them now..that way we can gain experience. I like how you can personalize the ULR to your name...that way it's easy for people to search you. I am still playing around with the website and my profile..but here it is so far.
I created a LinkedIn and here it is.. http://ca.linkedin.com/in/fullerrebecca

  23. LinkedIn seems like a great professional resource. It seems like an amazing way to make contacts in any field. As well it seems like a good way to look for jobs.

  24. I just spent some time exploring the website even more since this mornings class. I think its going to be really beneficial to me later.. or even this summer when I'm looking for a job (hopefully). It seems like its more meant for more experienced people like for once I've completed my degree and on the job hunt, but maybe I'll get lucky lol! I never knew it existed until today so thank you! Its still confusing to work but its getting easier. My profile is still under construction but this is it so far if you want to look at it =]

  25. At first I was a bit confused about how to use LinkedIn, but after playing around for a bit I'm getting use to it. I keeping discovering all these tools like "advanced job searching" and "companies I can follow." It may take awhile to get use to using it, but I think it will be really helpful in the future! Thanks Jess!

  26. LinkedIn is such an amazing website. I can explore career opportunities as well as connect with so many people in my field. This is definitely going to be helpful to me in the future!

  27. It was good to get back on LinkedIn. I created an account easrlier this term but never really did anything with it. After yesterday, my account is now 85% complete! I think it's great that we can easily find people, groups and conferences that match our interests.

  28. LinkedIn is such a great tool! Thanks so much for showing it to us. Up until just recently I had never heard of it before. I find the best part about it is that you still need to put the effort in to find people and apply, it doesn't do the work for you but it gives you the tools to do it better.

    Thanks!

  29. LinkedIn is an easy way to search for jobs in all faculties and organizations. It is also a great way to find other professionals and view there profiles and expertise if you are wanting a job just like them. LinkedIn allows you to communicate with organizations and view what they are looking for in an individual in order for you to fulfill everything they need in a certain position. There are many groups you can join and you can narrow your searches down to whatever you want.

  30. On Monday, we learned how to create a Linkedln profile. It is a very easy way to search for jobs, people in semilar professionals and organization. It also allows us to view conference and when/where they take place, as well as allows us to meet people using Linkedln. It is a great tool to search for jobs as it allows one to view the key terms that employers are searching for, and therefore, having such key term will enhance our potential to be viewed by potential employers. In addition to the above, Linkedln allows us to join different groups and organization across the world that matches our interests. It is one of the form of Social media used by many professionals today, and I am glad that I know about this, because I will be using it through our my career and use it to find job.

  31. I have never heard of Linkedln before this class. I think that it is a very useful tool for young graduates or soon to be graduates to find jobs in their fields. They can explore different job opportunities, and interact with people who share the same interests and experiences. I look forward to making my Linkedln profile more professional for future use.

  32. Is anyone else having trouble viewing the class notes for today? The pictures are all skewed and the text is cut-off :S

  33. After this class, I definitely need to get out of the traditional job hunting (looking at job postings or looking for hiring signs in the city) and try looking for ones in Linkedin. Linkedin not only keeps you posted about jobs but also expands your connections. You can also look at company profiles and find exactly what they're looking for in an employee. That is even better than reading posters or now hiring signs that don't tell you required experiences and qualifications.

  34. I was surprised at how many people I know already had LinkedIn accounts because this class is the first time that I have heard of it. I like the idea of being able to connect with people who are in my field of study. I think that this is going to be a very useful tool for me.

  35. Yet another another social networking tool, but I think that this one will be the most practical. I am still not comfortable with using LinkedIn but it seems that once I am able to utilize it properly it will be very useful in the next couple of years. What I like most is that you can narrow down your searches to connect with people whom share your interests. I believe that in the future LinkedIn will replace the classifieds section of the newspaper -- if it hasn't already.
    I am now 'LinkedIn' http://ca.linkedin.com/in/kyliemclean

  36. Linkedin seems like a good place to join groups of people sharing my fields of interest. Also a good place to look for work. My previous impression of Linkedin was that it was designed for mainly for businesses but now I realize that it's a global social networking website not that different from Facebook (in my opinion). While I enjoy variety I can't help wishing there was just one place to go for all my social networking needs but I suppose no single social networking business can be allowed to become a monopoly, so I suppose the variety of sites will just keep growing and we will always have fun catching up with them...

  37. Another useful social networking tool! After today's lab, I noticed that we would find so much information of groups, conferences or firms that we would benefit from. What's more, we would mention that we find the positions or jobs on the Linkedln website on our emails to employers. It can be great and useful if we write something about where we get the job information on our emails.

Actually, it's the first that I heard about"Linkedln". I think that we would connect it with our business facebook page and blog address when writing our resume or cover letter.

  38. LinkedIn is another great professional social networking site! I've seen people who have these profiles, but I was never really interested in joining because I'm not "established" yet. But this lecture made me realize the usefulness of this social networking site, especially with being able to find groups of interest to join and network.

  39. I wasn't sure about linkedin during Mondays class. Now that I've explored it a bit I think it is a pretty cool tool.

  40. I think that Linkedin is a great social networking tool for people of all ages- especially those looking for work and wanting to put their skills 'out there'. Searching around on it to find people seems a bit confusing to me right now, but I'm sure with practice that I will get the hang of it. It's great having another tool for prospective employers to use, along with my professional facebook page and blog. Linkedin strikes me as being the 'modern resume'.

  41. After setting up my account on LinkedIn, I recognized several people I knew right away! I wasn't aware of this social networking site until this class. I think it will be extremely helpful for future job hunting and for just getting connected with people in my field. Thanks for introducing us to this site!

  42. After opening my Linkedln, it is surprised that many my previous classmates also have the account. It is a new way for me to get the connection with friends and previous classmates. The uniqueness of Linkedln from other media is that it can connect with my friends' friends and make my connection much broadened.
Through Linkedln, I can also get useful information like conference, events I am interested and plus it is powerful tool to search job.
Thanks for introducing us another useful media.

  46. I've heard of LinkedIn before but never actually knew what it was so I'm glad that ALES204 introduced this site to us. I had my first experience with using LinkedIn today and it was pretty neat. It's awesome to have a tool like LinkedIn to search for people, jobs and companies. You also get to see who is attending what event or conferences. It's just another great way to connect with people. I definitely will use LinkedIn in the future. I love how professional the site is but also is so personal and easy to use.

  47. I've always been very curious about LinkedIn. It seems like a great way to connect with professionals in one's field and build solid business relationships. I think LinkedIn is a much better way to present an online profile of oneself over Facebook or other social networking site as it is much more professional and highlights one's credentials and skills much better. I look forward to using LinkedIn in the future.

  48. I found this lecture to be very helpful. While I had heard about LinkedIn, I was not aware of all of the different features, including the event apps. I had never thought about using this site in order to find out more information about companies that I apply for. I can see this website being very beneficial to me for networking with those in my field and potentially finding jobs in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have used LinkedIn before to obtain business colleagues' contact information, however I never realized how many different features that it can actually be used for. Since the lecture I have been searching for professionals in my field who live in Edmonton. Hopefully thanks to my new found knowledge I can use LinkedIn to obtain either a volunteer or job shadow position with one of them do get a better understanding of what happens in the real world after school and more work experience. I know what I will be doing over Christmas break!

  50. This is my first experience with LinkedIn, although I have heard of it. I am glad that this class gave me the push to create an account because it is something that is going to be very useful to me. I am planning on doing the dietetic internship in the next year and a half and it requires shadowing of a registered dietitian. I am planning on using LinkedIn to find this person.

    ReplyDelete
  51. After signing up with LinkedIn, I've already received invitations to join other LinkedIn networks and events. I like the search features available through LinkedIn. Having the ability to search for jobs according to description, city, firm, etc., and then connecting with other employees or personnel within a company of interest is a great advantage.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I've been exploring the LinkedIn website for some future internships/summer jobs. I am amazed at the convinces it gives people in contacting several companies all through one website. I have never heard of something like this before. Thank you lecture 25! Not only can I keep in contact with the company of my preference, but I can also keep track of new events and updates... this is awesome!
