Lecture 28: Podcasting & Interview Techniques

Happy Monday everyone!

  1. During the summer, my job consisted of a lot of driving, so instead of listening to the radio day after day I started to follow some podcasts. It was a great use of time to become informed instead of zoning out to music all the time. It would definitely be a great way of showing potential employers your commitment to the field and some of your personality in using your own personal podcast!

  2. I thought that this lecture was pretty interesting, podcasts are something we havent really covered a whole lot before this and to be honest I wasn't even completely sure what a podcast was! They can actually be pretty useful I see now though, and I am confident that I will use them to prepare for interviews and for studying in the future. Excellent info in this lecture!

  3. This lecture was interesting as I never really knew all of the ways that podcasts can be used. I always just thought that they were just audio clips of people talking. But, after searching up topics of interest on audioboo I really enjoyed listening to what some people/experts had to say. Also, this lecture just reinforced my need (although I already knew) to SLOW DOWN while talking.

  4. I thought that this lecture was interesting considering I have never used a podcast before. I can't believe all the new information that I am getting about what's available on the web when I thought I had a good idea already. Great lecture today and I can't wait to start audioboo in my lab tomorrow!

  5. I was never into podcasts until today's lecture. I'm so used to catching up on my favorite websites or blogs by reading. Today we learned about RSS feeds/google reader and podcasts. On my Android phone,I currently use Twitter and Pulse (awesome app for news updates on the go). I barely use RSS feeds because every blogger/websites I regularly go to have twitter accounts. But RSS is still very useful for getting updates faster. When it comes to podcasts, I think it's a better alternative to a radio show because with podcast, you don't have to miss a show, you can listen to a podcast whenever you want to. Podcast are not just great for keeping yourself up to date with news but it is also useful for sharing research information/results to other colleagues in your field, sharing lecture notes, practicing interview questions, etc. I think I'm going to start listening to podcasts on my phone when I'm bored.

  6. It's nice to see a course that actually recognizes podcasts as a great way to learn and teach. There is so much that can be done with them. I have been listening to miscellaneous podcasts over the last year and a half or so. (Mostly ones related to video games, but they're usually the funniest and easiest to listen to). Podcasts are a great way to break up any playlist. Sure music is fantastic, but a podcast can be just as good too, and sometimes better.

  7. Today's lecture was interesting. I liked how in the beginning it highlighted interview aspects to acknowledge since everyone wants to be successful at interviews! I found podcasting interesting as well because it was my first time hearing about it. Rather then reading news or things of interest you can just listen to it on the go like on your iPod. Definitely useful!

  8. Happy Monday to you as well!
I had a great time in class today learning how to read out loud in a clear and confidant tone of voice. It is important to take your time and read at a pace that your audience can understand. A great way to practice speaking on your own is to record yourself. This can be done using your computer, webpages such as audioboo or youtube, and even your smart phone. Looking forward to practicing interviewing people and being interviewed in this weeks class. This was a great lecture.

  9. I enjoyed today's class, I always wondered what the RSS on websites meant and now I know. I also like that I am now able to put all my favourite websites together in one place, that will definitely save time.

  10. I know that I have a tendency to speed up my talking speed when I'm nervous or in front of a large audience. Eventually this causes me to jumble up my words. Slowly, but surely this class and it's labs are improving my speech. I think that podcasting may be a great tool to enhance my skills as well. Great lecture, and I'm looking forward to the next!

  11. Looking forward to the lab this week - should be quite funny. I always feel like I sound so weird when I hear my own voice and don't believe it's me so it should be interesting.
I also don't think I speak fast but sometimes my brain wants to get out words faster than my mouth can handle so words can be jumbled together. I guess it's beneficial if you want to make up words, haha!

  12. Today's class really made me focus on my talking speed! audioboo seems like a good way to practice being interviewed and focus on presenting your best features to a potential employer.

  13. I'm looking forward to trying podcasting. I've heard of it before, but never knew what it was! And now I'm going to do one myself! This class keeps exposing me to new things that I would have never even thought of trying.

  14. Podcasting seems extremely interesting. I tried it once for talk shows but never quite got into it. I think for education it is a wonderful idea. If professors uploaded podcasts of all their lectures it could be extremely beneficial to all students. Hopefully this will come in the future! I will be on the lookout for interesting podcasts from now on .

  15. I didn't really know what podcasting was. I'm looking forward to learning more about it in lab tomorrow. I am also happy we will be practicing our interview skills. The first impression can make or break your chances at getting the job.

  16. I'm really looking forward to getting more familiar with podcasting since I started using it a few weeks ago for DJ sets from Ibiza and such. Its a great way to have information with you on the go since its easily transferred to an iPod. Some people like learning different ways and what better way to try out than Podcasting. I know I would love to have podcast of certain lectures attached to online notes for certain lectures.

  17. What is a Podcast? I asked myself that every time I heard the word, but I never pursued the answer. This lecture was a good introduction to podcasting. I agree that podcasts would be a good tool for professors to use; however, it may result in lower class attendance. I am interested to see what we do with podcasting in lab.

  18. When i thought of podcasts i only ever thought of dj's sharing there new music on itunes but after this class i found out it could be used for so much more. For example recording your own notes, field studies and for storage of information for future use. Also i learned that professors record some of their lectures so you can go back and review what was said in class later, which i think is a great idea since sometimes you cant write down everything a prof says.

  19. I did not like podcasts before as i didn't really had much confidence using internet, but my exposure to different websites at ales, i have gained much trust and confidence in using internet as tool. I learned many useful tips from the class discussion of things we would use podcast for, and many of my classmates made great comments that i had never thought about before, which opened my eye to think about podcast a second time. Podcast is a great way to prepare for interviews both for job or getting in a professional faculty such as Medicine. It is better than practicing in front of a mirror because you will be able to judge our voice pace. The pace of our voice, and rate of our speech is very important parameter in an interview setting. Having a intermediate speech rate, and low pace shows confidence and allows us to ensure you are understood.

Other tips i Learned in class was to mirror your interviewer, which i found was very interesting, yet it makes sense! also, I will be using podcast in the future to share notes, ideas for recipe with classmates, colleague where necessary.

  20. I really liked Monday's class about podcasts. My prior knowledge about podcasts are from this summer. I worked outside a lot and was allowed to listen to our ipods..my brother however, always listened to podcasts..this got me interested and he'd often share his nutrition and sport and exercise podcasts with me. I found this lecture very interesting because I actually learned more about podcasts..and definatley think profs should use them.

  21. I never really looked into everything a podcast can do for you. Learning more about it really influenced me to start listening to some and realized that I can learn from these podcasts. It is greatr to know that we can use it to learn, communicate, study, practise interviews and much more. I look forwrad to the lab in learning how to make one.

  22. Something interesting!!We just finished the interviews on lab. The Audioboo is useful when we need to pratice our interviews.I think that we would record our voices on our laptop, which means that we don't always need to log in the Audioboo each time. But it is really amazing that we would listen to other's records and share experience.

  23. Interviews are so nerve-racking! It's going to be nice to use audioboo to practice interviewing and then being able to listen to it back to hear exactly how I sound during the interview process. Even though I HATE hearing my own voice, when we recorded ourselves during the lab this week, I noticed that I do tend to do certain things with my voice when I'm nervous and I also say "um" a little too much. Good thing I caught it now and not in my next interview...

  24. This is my first experience with podcasting. Before today I had never heard a podcast or even knew where to find them. After searching around audioboo I found that the quality of podcasts varies a great deal. Many of them were not clear and the speaker lacked creativity. But on the other hand the speaker grabbed my attention right away.
Podcasts could be an effective means of broadcasting information to a large audience. I did a search of 'podcasting' on the ualberta search engine and found that podcasts have been used to broadcast faculty forums and presentations. By having a podcast cast to audience who listens to it becomes unlimited.

  25. I never knew what those little RSS symbols meant but in Monday's lecture I learned that they were a way that someone could subscribe to a podcast through an RSS feed and listen to it on an cellphone or an iPod. What I found most fascinating is that there are aggregators you can use to continually update all of your RSS feeds, I really like this because it's so convenient!

  26. I first heard about podcasting in my Biol 108 class. I have to admit, it was very handy when i missed classes, all I had to do was log onto eclass and listen to the professor. I think podcasting is a great thing. The only side effect to that would be low attendance, but the idea is very good. I also agree to what Annalise Young mentioned, podcasting are much more informative that listening to music. On another note, we practised our interview skills in the lab today, and my partner and I had fun coming up with answers pertaining to our CSL placements. Excellent interview skills are an asset to anyone looking for a job, and the only way to achieve that is through lots and lots of practice. I find that practicing infront of the mirror helps me whenever I have to do a presentation. On that note, CAPS also has great workshops that they provide to students who are looking to get ready for interviews. Anyone interested should contact them :)

  27. Podcasting is yet another term I have always heard, but never really knew what it was. Our exercise in lab today was helpful in getting us to practice answering random questions and trying to be coherent at the same time! Interview questions can be awkward to answer, so getting the chance to hear yourself was useful in determining what you need to work on for actual interviews. I think podcasts would be an effective educational tool; using multiple types of media while teaching would only enhance learning. I agree with my classmates though, this should not be the sole method of teaching since class attendance and participation among students is very important.

  28. Before Mondays lecture I knew little about pod-casting. After completing the lab this week I now know how easy it easy to present my thoughts on a topic verbally to the internet world! It was also nice to get to ask someone else questions in an interview setting because I have never been in that position!

  29. Before Mondays lecture I had never heard of pod casting before! It is a unique way to share your ideas again using online social media. Learning about interview techniques was an extremely helpful lecture because everyone is going to be interviewed, and it is crucial to be professional and know what you're going to say. In addition, the interview practice done in the lab using audioboo was also extremely helpful practice!

  30. I had a lot of fun working on podcasting in lab! I a used to hearing my voice recorded due to my job last year, as I had to podcast and make videos every week. So much fun! I miss that job! Audioboo is a very neat site that I haven't heard of before that would have been helpful to me last year! I will use audioboo in the future in order to create links for my podcasts!

  31. podcasting sounds like an innovative way to connect ideas to a broad audience of individuals. Sounds like a good way to practise interviews, I am interested to try it in lab this week.

  32. Before today, podcasting was completely foreign to me. It does not appeal to me for field work use, but I may use it in the future for interview practice. Listening to the replay of my lab interview helped me realize how much I can potentially improve by hearing myself answer questions. Podcasting can be useful for identifying personal weaknesses in my speech so that I can correct them.

  33. I found this lecture useful not so much for the pod casting but more as a guideline for public speaking. Having tone and emphasis when reading the paragraph is extremely noticeable and can be extrapolated to public speaking as well. By doing this exercise it was helpful in finding areas of improvement for me in speaking to a group of people.

  34. For a couple of years now I have been listening to podcasts on road trips, mainly Ricky Gervais' radio show with Steven Merchant and Karl Pilkington and a few other British talk shows. I love how I can download them off itunes and they since there are so many they last any length of drive. But it wasn't until this week and looking at Audioboo though did I realize how popular podcasts are in England. Hopefully one day they will become more common in America, as they are a very useful tool for spreading knowledge whether for entertainment purposes or to gain knowledge. I had a lot of fun recording audio-recordings with my classmates in the lab this week! It is so weird listening to the sound of your own voice in recording because it sounds nothing like it does in your head, well at least for me. Making audio-recordings are a great way to practice your speaking abilities and how it sounds to other people. I will definitely by using this new tool when preparing for interviews or oral presentations for work and school.

  35. I have heard of podcasts before but never really took interest in them. I have come across a couple of podcasts such as a blogger recording their blogpost. I think that podcasts are great because they allow you to listen and multitask. Some people learn better by listening and its awesome to have podcasts available to them. You can podcast about anything and Audioboo has a great collection of them. I had a fun time doing the interview exercise in lab. It's great practice for public speaking. Although I'm not particularly fond of my voice, it was nice to hear yourself interviewing and being interviewed.

  36. Creating a podcast of our interviews really helped me realize how important pitch, tone, volume and rate are when speaking. When I listened to my podcast, I noticed that my voice was high pitched (much more high than it is in my head), and that I talked really fast when interviewing. I think that interviews are much better when both the interviewer and the person being interviewed are comfortable, relaxed, and enjoying the process. In order to get to that point, I think it would take a lot of practice. I'm sure I will have many opportunities to practice these skills in the future.

  37. I have followed some really good nutrition expertise on their podcast, while never thought I will make some one day. I am confused on class why we need radioboo, since many software can record our voice and even make modifications. On this week lab, we practise a interview and recorded by various resource. Then we upload the radio to the radio boo which is available to the public. By practising in the lab, I figure out the confused point from class and learn a new skill for future career.

  38. For the longest time I saw the podcast section in itunes and just ignored it. I mean, why would I listen to people talk when I could listen to music? But after this class and doing some more exploration I have discovered there is so much more to podcasts and some are really entertaining and informative!I think this a great way toe experience an interview, it is certainly a lot more personable than a written version. One way I plan to incorporate podcasts into my own life is possibly using them in an online resume. I think it would be a great way for potential employers to learn a bit more about me.

  39. I never new what a podcast was before our class on it; it is much less complicated than I had thought it was. I think personally I will be listening to pod casts rather than creating them. However, I can see my self using it to record important information for class or research if I need to. I loved hearing about all the uncoventional ways to use a pod cast, like this, during the lecture.

  40. I heard about Podcast and RSS a lot before, but never got to know what they really are until this lecture. In addition, I found that audioBoo is quite useful. It is great tool for people share their audio documents on the Internet. I learned a lot of recording skills when doing the recording exercise in the lab.
