This lecture was extremely helpful! I learned a lot about citing and APA style citation that I did not know before. I also have to write a research paper for another one of my classes using APA style so I will definitely be looking back at this lecture as well as using the information that we learned in the lab this week!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much
Diane's presentation looked so cool! I know we had another guest lecturer use this program as well. We should spend a lab learning how to make presentations using that program. I especially like how you zoom to different parts. Captivating!
ReplyDeleteI've never had a class devoted to citing and referencing. It's really helpful to have it explained to you. Usually you're just on your own trying to figure it out. Something that should be simple is actually really complicated and Diane helped by making APA style a lot more clear. Thanks Diane!
ReplyDeleteThis lecture was very helpful. I thought it was going to be a repeat of previous citation lectures that I have attended, but I was very impressed with the material. I learned alot of new things that I did not get out of those previous lectures. So, thank you Diane for the help.
ReplyDeleteOne day I'm going to have to try Prezi! Very neat! Whenever I write papers, I tend to go on a citing rampage. I will definitely use refworks next time.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Bing images? How do we cite them when there is no information given? Should we try to avoid Google and Bing image searches?
ReplyDeleteThis lecture was really interesting, I learned a lot about the proper way to cite in the APA format. I've never had a whole lecture devoted to citing references, so it was nice to learn some new information. Life would be so much easier if there was one set referencing standard for every discipline though!
ReplyDeleteGreat Lecture today by Diane! She told us about a lot of really great resources that will really help out with referencing in the future! Still a little confused about citing photos though!
ReplyDeleteDiane had a great presentation today! She introduced the many ways of citing different forms of information such as tables, graphs and images from different sources. The ways in which these citations differ is very specific and it is important to include all the proper details such as commas and periods. The tutorial with refworks was awesome and very helpful, especially because it creates a bibliography for you!
ReplyDeleteOverall citing seems a little confusing but with practice I'm sure it will all come easier! Thanks for the lecture!
Diane gave a detail presentation on citing and referencing in today's lecture. Citing was confusing however we needed to cite the sources when we were doing a research paper especially Biology and English! Diane has told us some useful search in databases which helped us to find journals that have been peer-reviewed. Moreover, she has also introduced ways to cite tables, journals, or even figures. I hope I will get use to cite things and find it easy! Thanks to ALES204 and Diane!
ReplyDeleteI like how Diane emphasized on how to cite images and tables the most. I think we tend to overlook it and forget to cite them on our papers. I personally would just cite my references on the written portions of the paper. I also just discovered RefWorks today which is pretty neat. I find writing references list to be more frustrating than writing an article or essay. Thank you for the informative lecture.
ReplyDeleteNaomi Porciuncula
Diane gave us an awesome lecture today, I finally know how to properly cite tables, images, and graphs. I've heard of refworks since my first year, and only until today, I finally understand how it works, and how fast and easy life could be when it comes to bibliography. Thank you Diane!!
ReplyDeleteDiane's lecture on APA and citing today was very informative. I have another class where we are also going over the APA style at the same time which tells me that citing properly in university is essential. The lab assignment and today's lecture relate well with eachother. Diane highlighted that each reference has a different style depending on the number of authors and sources (journal, book, internet, etc).
ReplyDeleteThe best part of todays lecture was the introduction to RefWorks. I am definitely taking advantage of that resource.
Diane's lecture was very helpful in reminding me about citing everything that we take from a different source. It was helpful to learn how to cite photos, and good to learn that if you use a photo on your blog that I took from flickr I need to cite it! I will have to go over my blog and make sure that I have referenced all my photos. These past couple classes (and the lab) have been extremely helpful with the upcoming scientific journal assignment, as well as working on our E-Portfolios. The only recommendation I would give is to maybe have these types of lectures earlier on in the semester, so that we can practice using proper APA citation on our blog posts!
ReplyDeleteAlso another helpful aspect was learning how to search up journals and peer reviewed journals on the university library website. It will definitely help me in this class and for future classes. Thanks!
I found this presentation to be one of the most useful ones for applications to our lives as students. Lots of the content covered in this class focusses on skills related to our future careers but learning how to properly do the things showed in this presentation will help us in our career and now as students. Learning how to use RefWorks will help out largely in projects and papers that will be required for other courses. Thanks so much Diane!
ReplyDeleteEverything that Diane said can be done very quickly using RefWorks. I highly recommend ppl to use and try it. i often have difficult time citing pictures and tables using any kind of citing formats. Im more confident now . I have never heard of ULRICH for finding peer reviewed journals. Ill have to use it next time! It will def be helpful with the Lab E Portfolio assignment.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of RefWorks before this class, it is really useful. I will definitely be using it for my next paper. Referencing is going to be much easier now. It was also good to learn how to reference pictures and tables, this is something no one has ever really shown me how to do.
ReplyDeleteToday's lesson was another informative one that will help us not only with this class but others throughout our university careers. Learning how to cite properly is imperative for writing successful research papers. I was glad that the presentation had a focus on citing images and tables, they are two areas of citing that are often overlooked. Learning about RefWorks was another helpful tip that this class provided.
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a lecture devoted to citing and referencing. When it's explained step by step like this it seems less confusing. I usually just muddle through and hope for the best. The APA style now seems more manageable.
ReplyDeleteThe lecture today was very informative and it taught me how to cite picture, table and figures properly which i did not know how to do. Im also just going to say that refworks is probably one of the best things that i could have seen in this course so far. Its is definitely going to save me so much time when creating my bibliography.
ReplyDeleteDiane's lecture was great in the sense that she explained APA style in a practical sense. The specifics on how to cite tables and figures was very helpful, as I have never been taught that component of APA. This afternoon I went back to my blog and removed some of my images I had got from the internet. I have added some personal photos instead, therefore I don't break any copyright laws. I also added a citation to an image that I still wanted to include on my blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the citation tool RefWorks with us, I will be using it for my upcoming lab repot.
With all the types of resources available to use when report writing, it can be confusing to know how to appropriately reference the resource to support your work. This weeks lab and lecture have been useful in clarifying not only how to reference obscure resources, but also how to reference features within a resource. The introduction to Refworks will prove to be extremely useful in future report writing. Thanks Pam and Diane!
ReplyDeleteDiane's lecture was creative and engaging. I enjoyed her concise explanation of APA formatting, especially regarding citations for figures. Use of proper citations in University and our future professional careers is essential. A good lecture like this one was great for giving us a good strong foundation for citations. I especially loved Diane's introduction to RefWorks! I can't calculate how many countless hours I've spent ensuring my papers have been properly formatted.
ReplyDeleteRemember all, when you use Bing of Google or whatever search method, you still need to cite the image. Google is just the search engine (like a university database you use to find journals), you still need to tell us the information about the image.
ReplyDeleteI have had a lot of experience with referencing and citations. However, I have only used MLA before, so I found Diane's talk incredibly helpful. I think I have a better idea of how to use APA now :)
ReplyDeleteI found this lecture to be incredibly useful! Because there are so many different citation styles that are used at the university, I find if really easy to mix different styles, resulting in improper citations. Going very clearly through the expectations of APA citation will help a lot with my future papers and assignments. Also, resources such as Ulrich's and RefWorks will help me save some time. I found this lecture to be very applicable to work that I'm doing now in my classes.
ReplyDeleteDiane's lecture was very helpful! I've never seen such an in depth presentation about APA. Usually profs give out links for tips or refer citation books, but never go through the concept thoroughly. The presentation answered many hindering questions and informed me of some things I did not know about. This lecture topic was perfect timing for essay month!
ReplyDeleteDiane's lecture was excellent. I was expecting it to be dry, but she is a great presenter and it was very informative. I know I will be utilizing many of her tips right away as I will begin a Biology lab report very soon. The most exciting part of her lecture was finding that we can get RefWorks to cite for us. That will save an immense amount of time and lost marks for little mistakes.
ReplyDeleteHi - wow lots of comments!
ReplyDeleteAs Jess said in an earlier message Google and Bing is similar to using Flickr and a database. So when you find an image in Google or Bing there should be a link to the image file (similar to the Flickr file name) and substitute Flickr for either Google or whatever was used to find the image.
Hope that helps
Diane
The lecture by Diane was instantly of use to me. I currently have projects in two other classes that require research and multiple citations. I have already had the opportunity to use her tips for citing figures and finding academic journals. Previous to her lecture, I had no idea that image citation was such an important issue; her suggestions will definitely help me in dealing with pictures on my ALES blog. Refworks is also new to me, and I can see it being very useful in the future.
ReplyDeleteInteresting lecture, learned lots about APA citation style for images and tables, etc. Also find the various university libraries' contributions toward posting summarized selections from the big book quite useful. Thanks to libraries and librarians everywhere for making student life easier.
ReplyDeleteI have already used what I have learned in Diane's lecture for my lab report this week. Usually I dread citing and referencing but this time it took me no time at all, and I am not questioning if I will get marks taken off for improper format. Thanks a lot Diane, still need to get a hang of the picture-citing though...lots to remember!
ReplyDeleteDiane's presentation was very informative and will definitely help me throughout university. Not to mention her presentation was really cool to look at compared to the traditional powerpoint presentation. Citing and referencing can be very frustrating so I'm glad she introduced us to Refworks. It looks really useful and I'm definitely going to check it out. and I don't think I ever had to cite a figure or table in my papers before but it seems to be quite a difficult task. I'm glad she emphasized how to cite figures and tables from different sources. This will definitely help me in the future.
ReplyDeleteDiane's presentation was very informative, her information will definitely be of use to me... I have two lab reports to write very soon! I like the idea of refworks, I had never heard of it before but it sounds like an easy way to cite articles properly. The citing for photos was also new to me, I was never really sure about proper citations until now.
ReplyDeleteThis is neat. I definitely need this information. Citing on refworks sure decreases the workload a lot. Citing photos is totally new to me. I'm glad to have attended Diane's talk about this.
ReplyDeleteDiane's lecture was very helpful and interesting. When you do not write papers very often, you tend to forget how to cite properly. I always refer to the OWL Purdue APA style online. I find it to be very easy to understand. I will definitely try refworks next time I write a paper. It looks like it is a very easy way to cite articles.
ReplyDeleteDiane's lecture was very useful. I am so glad I came to class. I found it extremely worthwhile, and I feel like it won't be as hard to find journal articles and knowi to site them. However, there are still a few times when I am not sure. Photos, for example; when is it acceptable to use them? And when don't we have to ask for permission. I do like that she suggested we use our own photos to avoid any confusion.
ReplyDeleteIt is my first time see a lecture given by Prezi. The obvious advantage is Prezi can show the whole pic , so we will not lost where we are. And I also like its zoom in function. Diane also showed us how to use Refworks, one of most useful tool I have learned from this course, which will save me tons tons time in the future.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Diane's lecture was so useful for our scientific assignment as well as useful for other courses that have research and essays that need citation. Learning how to add in tables, graphs, charts, and pictures can make a post, or paper more interesting..but it is really important to know how to cite them. I for sure learned a lot and need to fix my picture on my blog! It's crazy how easy it is to be 'stealing' someone else's information if you incorrectly cite them as a reference..this could be harmful to a student's essay..we could end up just like the dean of medicine..not good!! Thanks for all the new info for citations!!
ReplyDeleteThis lecture was extremely helpful! It answered many questions about the article assignment, although I still have many. Diane was very professional and held my attention the whole time. She was comfortable talking about something she clearly knows a lot about. I would love to hear from her more - she brought a lot of citing problems to my attention, such as how easy it is to take someone elses photo.
ReplyDeleteDiane's lecture was very informative! We cite and use references pretty much on every assignment that we have in university. Therefore her resources will be of definite use in the future! I also really enjoyed her Prezi presentation. Animations keep me engaged in the presentation haha.
ReplyDeleteI think we can all agree after last year's Dean of Medicine fiasco how important citing truly is. But a lot of people forget to cite their images and that is just as much of a offense. Diane's lecture was really vital as it made us aware not only of the importance of citing images but of how to do it correctly. But what I REALLY want to know is how can we make a prezi presentation like that! can we get a lecture on those are made?!! they look amazing!
ReplyDeleteDiane did a truly great job keeping my attention with her prezi presentation. It gave me some good ideas for my own presentation I'm putting together. Her lecture was very helpful and will definitely improve my citation skills!
ReplyDeleteI found Diane's lecture very useful, it was good to learn about some different databases and how to find articles. I was glad she told us about Ulrich’s since it makes it easier to find more information about a journal and to see if it is peer reviewed.
ReplyDeleteIt was good to get some citation information cleared up! I will definitely use this info to make citation for my papers easier.
ReplyDeleteAPA, MLA,CHICAGO.... Why are there so many formats for scientific paper? Isn't it better to use one common format? Well, ok, it is still good to see some useful information about citation, I almost forgot them all... But, I have to say, I love this respect for knowledge.
ReplyDeleteI think this lecture is quite useful! Citing and referencing are and will always be important parts in my study. Diane not only showed us the importance of citing and referencing, but also showed us where we can find help when we have citing and referencing problems on the university library site. Anyway, this lecture is very informative and useful!
